How to Convert VTT to SRT (and When You Actually Need To)
VTT and SRT look similar but aren't accepted everywhere equally. Here's when converting from VTT to SRT actually matters, and how the conversion works.
If you pulled captions from a web video or an HLS stream, there’s a good chance you ended up with a .vtt file. That’s fine for the browser, but the moment you want to use those captions somewhere else, you’ll often hit a wall.
Where VTT falls short
- Video editing software. Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, and most desktop NLEs have much more mature SRT import support. VTT import is hit-or-miss depending on version.
- Uploading to platforms. While YouTube accepts both, a number of smaller platforms, media players, and legacy systems only recognize
.srt. - Older or embedded devices. Smart TVs, set-top boxes, and some media server software (Plex, Jellyfin, Emby) have historically had more reliable SRT support than VTT, especially on older firmware.
If you’re moving captions out of a web context and into a general-purpose video tool, SRT is usually the safer bet.
What actually changes in the conversion
Converting VTT to SRT is mechanical, not creative: nothing about the actual captions or their timing changes.
- The
WEBVTTheader line is dropped (SRT doesn’t use one). - Timestamps switch from periods to commas:
00:00:01.000becomes00:00:01,000. - Sequential cue numbers are added if they aren’t already present.
- VTT-specific styling (cue positioning,
<c>voice/color tags) is stripped, since SRT has no equivalent. If your VTT file relies heavily on positioning or colored speaker tags, that visual information won’t carry over, only the text and timing will.
That last point is the only real loss to be aware of: if your captions are plain dialogue with no special styling, the conversion is effectively lossless. If they use VTT’s styling features, you’ll keep the words and timing, but not the visual formatting. SRT simply doesn’t have anywhere to put that information.
Converting
You don’t need to touch any of this by hand. Our VTT to SRT converter runs entirely in your browser. Upload nothing, paste or drop your file, and it rewrites the header, timestamp format, and cue numbering in place, instantly.
